Publicerat September 5, 201312 yr A NEW DISEASE OF MOOSE. IIIA NEW BACTERIUMIN a recent paper, the first of this series, Thomasand Cahn' have described a new disease among themoose (Alces americana americana) in northeasternMinnesota and the adjacent region of Ontario, Canada. The disease is described as appearing in theearly spring, coincident with the final metamorphosisof the tick Dermacentor albipictus into the adultstage, which tick heavily infests the moose of thisarea. The symptoms are described as marked activityshown by blind, aimless wandering, followed by aparalysis of the limbs and death in a great manycases. Ticks taken from animals dying of the diseasetransmitted the disease to guinea pigs and rabbits inthe laboratory, these dying with symptoms similar tothoseexhibited by the moose. The blood picture accompanyingthe disease is described and the presenceof bacteria noted. An organism was isolated which, when inoculated into experimental animals, producedthe symptoms of the moose disease and causeddeath. In a second paper, Wallace, Thomas andCahn2 discuss further experiments with this isolatedorganism and emphasize its extreme virulence. Guineapigs and rabbits were killed in an hour by inoculatingthe organism or a filtrate of the organism. This virulentorganism was pronounced a bacterium, and wasplaced tentatively in the Klebsiella group. It is acapsulated rod form with a tendency to assume acoccoid shape; it grows as an excessively mucoid colonyon agar, and produces Beta hemolysis on bloodagar. Its growth is extremely rapid, covering anagar slant in five hours, and it apparently producesan extra-cellular toxic substance. Since this paperwas published a great deal of work has been doneupon the organism, involving its life history, pleomorphicbehavior and physiological reactions. Withmuch of this completed, the writers are convincedthat it is a new organism not hitherto described, andbecause of the seriousness of the disease which it causes, together with its astonishing virulence, theybelieve it should be named. This organism is thereforedesignated as Klebsiella paralytica, because ofthe paralysis it causes. A detailed report, coveringall experimental and cultural work to date, is aboutto go to press.A. R. Publicerat September 5, 201312 yr A NEW DISEASE OF MOOSE.
