This writer's favorite (Jack) McPhee adventure involved McPhee, (Joe) Rychetnik, and an old Athapaskan Indian friend of McPhee's. It took place on the Minto Flats area west of Fairbanks. McPhee and Rychetnik flew out to the Indian's cabin for a moose hunt. McPhee had written he would be coming and the two brought the old man some groceries. Upon their arrival, the old man assured them they would all get a moose, but he needed to get his first. After all, it was his source of food. All in agreement, the Indian set about loading ammo for his Model 94 Winchester carbine. As Rychetnik described it, he took a spent 30-30 case, punched out the primer with a nail and hammer. Then he put in a new primer from a box that Jack had given him the year before. Pushed the primer in the hole and then put the case base down on a butcher block of sorts and whacked it in with a home made mallet.

He then filled the case to the brim with 4831... On top of the powder, he pushed in a lead bullet that showed some use, but the grease grooves were still OK. The Indian pushed the bullet down until the last grease groove was in and then crimped the case neck with a pair of rusty pliers. He then slid the case very carefully into the chamber of the carbine and we all went up on his sod roof, via a small ladder.

It wasn't long before a nice bull moose appears and starts munching on the alders about 300 (yards) away and working his way slowly towards the cabin. When he was about 75 yards out and some idiot dog began to bark, the Indian let the shot go. The moose staggers a few steps and goes down and we scamper down the ladder and go over to see it...

(The Indian) cuts the wound open and fingers around until he locates the bullet wrapped in the bloody lung tissue and gets it out for us to see. It was all bloody so he pops it into his mouth to clean it up and then hands it to Jack to inspect. Hardly deformed, just showing slight rifling that was left by the gun. "Good for another moose--that baby get me five so far!" said the old man with a big grin. ...
